Paris 2024 Olympics: Gymnastics
Simone Biles claimed another gold medal in the vault, while Jade Carey took bronze. Pommel horse specialist Stephen Nedoroscik will aim for a medal on the apparatus.
This achievement brings her total to 10 Olympic medals, including seven golds. At the Paris 2024 Olympics Games, Biles has secured three gold medals so far. She is also set to compete in the balance beam and floor exercise finals on Monday.
Women Football
The U.S. women’s soccer team advanced with a 1-0 win over Japan, setting up a semi-final against either Canada or Germany on Tuesday. For a moment, it looked like the reigning World Cup champions might face a significant upset in the quarterfinals. However, as the sun set over the stade de Lyon, so did Colombia’s Olympic aspirations.
Fifty-two minutes into the match, Colombia’s Mayra Ramirez and Leicy Santos had given their team a 2-0 lead. The Colombians then focused on defense, shifting from offense to protect their advantage against the champions.
Spain, however, made a comeback, with Jenni Hermoso and Irene Paredes scoring to equalize the match 2-2 after 120 minutes. The game moved to penalty shootouts, where Colombia’s Catalina Usme was the first to take a shot but was stopped by Spain’s goalkeeper, Cata Coll. The Colombians struggled with Liana Salazar missing her penalty, while Spain converted all their attempts.
Although Jorelyn Carabali briefly revived Colombia’s hopes by scoring a third penalty, the shootout was extended. In the end, at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Spain advanced to the semifinals with four successful penalties, eliminating Colombia after a 2-2 draw in overtime and a 4-2 win in the shootout.
Track and Field
Team USA won silver in the 4x400m mixed relay, falling just short of victory to the Netherlands in the final stretch. Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon, and Kaylyn Brown secured the medal for the U.S., which might be disappointing given they seemed on track for gold for much of the last lap.
Britain claimed the bronze medal
Sha’Carri Richardson from the USA claimed second place in the second women’s 100-meter semifinal on Saturday, qualifying for the event’s final.
Running confidently in second, Richardson opted not to exert full effort towards the race’s end. Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia emerged victorious in the semifinal with a time of 10.89 seconds. Both runners, along with Melissa Jefferson from the USA, will compete in the final.
In the third 100-meter semifinal, USA’s Twanisha Terry edged into the final, advancing by just one one-hundredth of a second. The final will feature three American runners: Terry, Melissa Jefferson, and Sha’Carri Richardson.
Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was absent from the women’s 100-meter semifinal on Saturday, making her ineligible to compete for a medal. At 37 years old, Fraser-Pryce is one of the most accomplished athletes in track and field. The reason for her last-minute withdrawal remains unknown. Noah Lyles has started his Olympics journey in Round 1 of the men’s 100-meter.
Swimming
American Alex Walsh lost the bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley when officials ruled that she did not complete the backstroke-to-breaststroke turn correctly. As a result, the bronze medal went to Australia’s Kaylee McKeown.
Katie Ledecky has a chance to add another medal to her collection in the 800-meter freestyle. The U.S. team will also compete against Australia and China in the mixed 4×100 medley relay.
Paris 2024 Olympics: Basketball
After starting their Olympic journey with three straight losses in the pool stage, the U.S. women’s 3×3 basketball team made a strong comeback with four consecutive wins, keeping their chances of defending their Tokyo gold medal alive.
Following narrow victories over France and Canada on Friday and a 14-12 win over China today, the U.S. has advanced to the knockout rounds. Hailey Van Lith led the team with a game-high 6 points.
The U.S. will play China again at 4:05 p.m. ET, aiming to secure a place in the semifinals.
Women’s Triple Jump
The Stade de France is buzzing with activity: javelins flying, shot puts being thrown, and the fastest women in the world sprinting among it all.
The women’s triple jump final has just begun, with Jasmine Moore and Keturah Orji representing Team USA in the event.
