Yamal Makes History in Spain’s Euro 2024 Triumph over France

After Randal Kolo Muani headed in Kylian Mbappe‘s cross to give France an early lead, Yamal scored a memorable goal from outside the box at the age of 16 years and 362 days, marking his place in the record books.

Yamal’s goal came in the 21st minute, and Spain took the lead just four minutes later when Dani Olmo’s shot was redirected into the net by France defender Jules Kounde. France mounted a spirited response after an electrifying first half, with Aurelien Tchouameni’s header saved and Mbappe denied on a bold attempt.

Playing without a face mask for the first time since breaking his nose earlier in the tournament, France’s captain had a prime chance to equalize late in the game, but his shot sailed high over the bar, highlighting his recent struggles.

While Spain has exhibited the tournament’s most potent attacking force, they also showcased strong defensive capabilities, maintaining their path towards a fourth European Championship title. Meanwhile, France struggled to break down a formidable opponent, setting the stage for a challenging final against either England or the Netherlands on Sunday.

Yamal continues to rise as a star

Spain secured their place in the final as the standout team of this Euro tournament, winning all six matches and scoring a tournament-high 13 goals. Their young talents have been particularly notable, with Yamal and 21-year-old winger Nico Williams frequently making headlines.

This time, the focus was squarely on Yamal. At just under 17 years old, the forward has already had an impressive breakthrough season at Barcelona, becoming their youngest-ever player and goalscorer.

He has carried this success onto the international stage, becoming the youngest player to score in the history of the European Championship, showing a maturity well beyond his years.

Yamal appeared calm and composed leading up to the biggest match of his career, and he seized the opportunity with a superbly struck bending shot into the top corner. His goal emphasized that the teenager possesses all the attributes needed to establish himself as one of the world’s top talents.

France’s Disappointments

France reached the World Cup final two years ago with a squad capable of potentially achieving similar success here.

However, a combination of cautious strategies and Mbappe’s injury played roles in their ultimate letdown. Mbappe, who scored only once during Euro 2024, has seemed out of form since sustaining a nose injury in the tournament opener against Austria.

While a superb assist that led to France’s goal in this match suggested a possible resurgence at a critical moment, Mbappe was notably absent during other crucial phases of play. Consequently, Didier Deschamps’ team exits the tournament having scored just four goals, with only one from open play.
