TRANSFER UPDATE: IS AUBAMEYANG NEARLY JOINING OM?

Aubameyang.

Speculations have emerged indicating that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a 34-year-old forward currently playing for Chelsea, is nearing a move to OM. According to these reports, the Gabonese national, who had a comparatively underwhelming season, is believed to have identified Marseille as the ideal club to rejuvenate his career.

Around 18 months following his controversial departure from Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has somewhat receded from the limelight. The 34-year-old forward is now on the verge of a comeback with OM, as our sources indicate that he has agreed to a two-year contract with the Marseille-based club on Monday. The only remaining obstacle is to convince Chelsea to part ways with him, potentially by releasing him from the final year of his contract. This would mark the end of a mixed experience for Aubameyang.

After rising to prominence at Saint-Étienne, Aubameyang made the move to Borussia Dortmund in 2013, enjoying a fruitful period of four and a half seasons. He amassed an impressive tally of 141 goals and 36 assists in 213 appearances. Subsequently, he had a successful tenure at Arsenal, finding the net 92 times in 163 matches. However, his time at Arsenal concluded unhappily, with his relationship with Mikel Arteta becoming increasingly strained.

In his statement, he commented that Arteta lacks the ability to handle high-profile individuals or star players, emphasizing the preference for young players who are quiet and compliant. In contrast, the Spanish coach acknowledged that the trust between him and the player, whom he regards as the most vital player at the club, had deteriorated.

An abbreviated yet highly fruitful stint at Barça

In the winter of 2022, Arsenal terminated his contract and provided him with €8.5 million in compensation. Shortly after the transfer window closed, Barça swiftly acquired him, but his time with the club was limited to half a season. He quickly established himself as a preferred option ahead of Luuk De Jong and Martin Braithwaite, impressively scoring 13 goals in 23 matches. However, on the final day of the summer transfer window, Chelsea secured his services for a two-season contract worth €12 million.

Although he initially enjoyed regular playing time and scored 2 out of his 3 goals in the Champions League during the 2022-2023 season, the Gabonese international later faced challenges due to his club’s extensive transfer activities and frequent changes in coaching staff. His playing time gradually decreased following the World Cup to the point where he was not included in the squad for the Champions League finals.
