India secured their place in the Cricket World Cup final for the first time since 2011, achieving a convincing 70-run victory over New Zealand and maintaining their impeccable campaign.
The hosts concluded the group stage undefeated, winning all nine matches, and carried their outstanding form into the knockout stages. Virat Kohli made history by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI centuries, reaching his 50th in the first innings as India posted an imposing 387 runs.
Shreyas Iyer also delivered an impressive century in just 67 deliveries, featuring eight sixes. On the bowling front, Mohammed Shami continued his remarkable World Cup performance, securing seven wickets for 57 runs.
Despite New Zealand’s top order resisting other bowlers, Shami made crucial breakthroughs in the powerplay, including a wicket with his first ball. He returned later to disrupt the partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson. In spite of Mitchell’s resilient innings of 117, where he battled cramps and the loss of batting partners, he couldn’t lead New Zealand to victory.
India now awaits the outcome of the second semi-final between Australia and South Africa to determine their opponents in the Cricket World Cup final on November 19 in Ahmedabad.
