With the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships set to take place in Glasgow, Great Britain, this month, top BMX riders from all around the world will once again compete.
At the Glasgow BMX Centre on August 12 and 13, the BMX racers will be the main attraction. This dedicated BMX venue has held two rounds of the 2022 World Cup since it was first built for the 2018 European Championships. This year is the 27th edition of the event, which has been held every year since 1996 except 2020.
In the premier division, Felicia Stancil of the United States and Simon Marquart of Switzerland are the reigning champions. Two-time Olympic champion Mariana Pajón, Olympic gold medalists Niek Kimmann and Beth Shriever, and others are hoping to reclaim their top spots on the podium.
There are six gold medals up for grabs in the junior (17–18), under-23, and elite classes for both men’s and women’s competitions. In addition, the competition will award the top three athletes in the Elite and U23 divisions, representing their respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs), with UCI points in the Olympic ranking.
The resources provided will offer you further information about Beth Shriever’s special path to Paris 2024 as well as specifics about the requirements for BMX racing at the next Games.
World Championships of 2023 UCI BMX Racing: Notable Cyclists to Watch
Four rounds of the current World Cup season have been finished, and French cyclists have established their supremacy in the men’s divisions. Romain Mahieu is now the leader after winning two games and taking second place. He is now the clear favorite going into the World Championships thanks to this performance and his outstanding form.
Another Frenchman, Joris Daudet, won the most recent World Cup event at Papendal in June, giving him two victories this year. Right now, Sylvain André, the 2018 world champion, is in fourth place.
The medal competition will be strong at the next event in Glasgow. Olympic champion Niek Kimmann, who advanced to three finals this season with a best finish of fourth, Colombian rider Diego Arboleda, who finished on two podiums in this year’s World Cup circuit, reigning champion Simon Marquart, and local favorite Kye Whyte, the Olympic silver medalist, are notable contenders.
Olympic champion Beth Shriever has led the women’s team to victory in three of the four World Cups so far this season, demonstrating outstanding play. She is clearly in the lead and will have the passionate backing of her British supporters in Glasgow as she looks to build on her 2021 triumph by winning another world title.
The Australian cyclist Saya Sakakibara will be one of Beth Shriever’s formidable rivals. Although Sakakibara’s lowest finish this season was 12th, she was able to win the race that Shriver did not and has advanced to two more finals.
Despite being an experienced athlete, Alise Willoughby, a two-time world champion and silver medallist at the 2016 Olympics, has finished on the podium three times this season. Another skilled rider who is anticipated to be a fierce rival is Mariana Pajón.
It would be a mistake to underestimate the reigning champion, Felicia Stancil, even though she faced difficulties during the World Cup season. The Smulders sisters from the Netherlands, Laura and Merel, are also ready to make an impression on the tournament.
