Phot of Beijing stadium ready for the World Athletics tournament in 2027.

World Athletics Council accepts entry requirements and qualification system for World Athletics Championships Beijing 27. The qualification process will be a mix of world rankings and entry requirements like it has been for previous international championships. For the 2027 global Championships, the system will have around 40% of athletes qualifying via entry standards and 60% via world rankings.

The plan is designed to ensure that the world’s best athletes in each sport compete at the World Championships, rewarding both outstanding individual performances and consistent, elite competition throughout the qualifying phase.

The entry requirements and the target number of participants in each discipline were set after a detailed analysis of present performance trends in the sport, taking into account the effects of technological and preparation improvements and the increasing depth of results in many disciplines. The majority of athletes are expected to be eligible for selection via rankings, rather than a single entry criterion, indicating the growing role of the standards as a qualification method.

To level the playing field for athletes with limited access to top tournaments, the world rankings have increased the significance of the results score and decreased the significance of the placement score. Under the new system, athletes will have four different options to qualify, either by meeting the entry standards during the qualifying period, by having strong results at designated competitions, by a wild card or by being ranked well in the world rankings at the end of the relevant ranking period.

The qualifying period for the marathon is from midnight November 3, 2025, through May 2, 2027. For the 10,000 meters, race walks, mixed events and relays, the window is February 23, 2026 until midnight on August 22, 2027. Midnight: All other fields can meet the entry requirements, August 23, 2026, to August 22, 2027.

For entry standards purposes, performances should be achieved primarily in category C competitions and above, to ensure that the mark has been set at a competition that meets the minimum standards. Results from lower category events will still count for the world rankings. Road running performances in Label road races – category E – for the 5km and 10km will also be taken as performances for the admission standard purposes, given that there are very few meetings in the category C and above for the 5000m and 10,000m on the track. You can also get marathon marks in Label road events.

If no other qualifying athlete from the same region enters the same event, area champions in individual events—aside from marathons—will be deemed to have fulfilled the requirements for the World Championships. The winners of Gold Label marathons held in 2027 up until May 2nd, as well as the top five finishers at Platinum Label marathons held during the qualification period, will also be deemed to have met the qualification conditions.

Wild cards will be available to the reigning world champions of 2025, the winners of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship 2026, the top hammer performers on the 2026 Continental Tour, the winners of the 2027 Wanda Diamond League and the winners of the 2026 World Race Walking Tour and World Combined Events Tour. Under this criterion, all four athletes of a member federation will be able to participate in an event. If a wild card event has more than one athlete from a member federation who qualifies for it, that federation must choose one athlete to fill the position.

The WCH Beijing 27 is open to the 12 best teams of each discipline at the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26. At the end of the qualification season, the last four quota spots in each relay discipline will be attributed to the highest-ranked teams on top lists.

During the qualification period, World Athletics will publish an often updated “Road to Beijing 27” tool that will give athletes, member federations, the media and supporters – a current snapshot of the qualification situation in each discipline.
