Côte d’Ivoire’s 1-0 triumph over DR Congo on Wednesday, February 7th, at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023 in Abidjan’s Olympic Stadium, has propelled them to the continental title match.
This semi-final victory presents Côte d’Ivoire with the chance to secure their first championship since their 2015 win against Ghana in the final. Their sole other AFCON title was claimed in 1992.
The initial half of the game was fiercely contested, with both teams having opportunities, including two late chances for the hosts. Sébastien Haller narrowly missed the goal with a shot in the 40th minute, followed by Franck Kessie hitting the goal post three minutes later.
The Ivorian Elephants capitalized on the momentum from these late opportunities in the second half. Haller scored at the 65th minute, giving Côte d’Ivoire a crucial 1-0 lead that they maintained until the final whistle.

With their victory over DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire advances to the final showdown scheduled for Sunday, February 11th, where they will meet Nigeria. The two sides clashed previously in the tournament’s group stage, with Nigeria securing a narrow 1-0 victory in a tightly contested match.
