The Paris 2024 Olympics is shaping up to be a remarkable showcase of global talent, and today’s update brings exciting news and developments from the heart of the French capital. With the Games just around the corner, athletes, organizers, and fans are gearing up for an unforgettable celebration of sportsmanship, skill, and international unity.

On Sunday, 13 gold medal events took place. Initially, there were meant to be 14, but the Men’s Street skateboarding event was postponed to Monday due to rain. Team USA’s Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon, who have been friends since they were 8, earned a silver medal in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard final, marking the first medal for Team USA in the 2024 Games.

Paris 2024 Olympics: Swimming

Americans Jack Alexy, Hunter Armstrong, Caeleb Dressel, and Chris Guiliano joined forces to win the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, earning Team USA its first gold medal of the Paris Olympics.

Renowned swimmer Katie Ledecky added to her impressive collection by winning her 11th career Olympic medal, a silver in the women’s 400m freestyle, where she was outpaced by Australia’s Ariarne Titmus. At present, Team USA is tied with Australia for the most medals, promising an exciting rivalry over the coming two weeks.

The American squad clocked in at 3:09.28, capturing their third consecutive Olympic title in this event. Australia secured second place with a time of 3:10.35, and Italy took bronze with a time of 3:10.70.

In the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, Australia claimed gold over the U.S. with an Olympic record time of 3:28.92. Team USA took silver, setting an American record with a time of 3:30.20, while China earned the bronze. The four American swimmers who medaled in this event are Simone Manuel, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske.

China’s first gold medal of the games came in the shooting mixed team air rifle event. The reigning world champions, Chang and Chen, maintained their lead throughout, but Bacon and Cook acknowledged that the challenge of keeping up with the strong Chinese duo helped them secure the silver.

“Diving behind the great team of China definitely put a lot of pressure on us,” Cook remarked. “But watching them nail their dives motivated us to perfect ours. I think they pushed us to be better, and I’m really happy to walk away with that silver.”

Cook, 29, who resides just outside Houston, competed in Rio in 2016, making her the first U.S. diver to compete in nonconsecutive games.

Gymnastics

Women’s gymnastics team qualifications were held early today. With Simone Biles at the helm, the U.S. team qualified in first place and has finalists in both the all-around and individual events.

Cycling

Team USA’s Haley Batten won a silver medal in the women’s cross-country cycling after a thrilling battle for second place with Sweden’s Jenny Rissveds.

Women’s Beach VolleyBall

In preliminary play, Brazilian duo Carolina Solberg and Bárbara Seixas defeated Japan’s Hasegawa Akiko and Miki Ishii, with Bárbara clinching the win with a toss just inside the line.

Known as Carol and Bárbara, the Brazilian pair is the country’s second team, while Duda Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos are ranked number one in the world.

The U.S. is also a dominant force in this event, tied with Brazil for the most women’s beach volleyball medals at seven. America’s top gold medal contenders, Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes, will play their first preliminary game at 4 p.m. ET.

Basketball

The Serbians have surged to a 10-2 lead against the USA less than three minutes into the first quarter of their Group C matchup. The U.S. seems unsettled on offense, with their only points coming from a LeBron James steal and fast-break dunk.

Serbia is playing a physical game and exploiting offensive mismatches. Following a U.S. timeout, Anthony Davis has substituted in for Joel Embiid.

As the second half starts, the USA has increased its lead from nine to 12. Kevin Durant has been the team’s standout player, while LeBron James has also made a notable contribution. He has accumulated 14 points, five assists, and three rebounds, with an impressive 6-of-7 shooting from the field. The USA now leads 63-51.

Football: Brazil leads Japan 1-0

Brazilian forward Jheniffer opened the scoring in the 56th minute with a strike from the top of the penalty box, assisted by Ludmila.

Canada Appeals Drone Use Sanctions

A complaint was made against the Canadian women’s national team for allegedly filming an opponent’s training session.

This revelation is part of the fallout from an alleged drone spying scandal at the Olympics, causing significant turmoil for Canada, the defending champions.

FIFA has banned coach Bev Priestman, who had already been sent home from France, for a year and imposed a $226,000 fine on Canada Soccer. Additionally, the governing body docked Canada six points in the Olympics women’s soccer tournament.

The incident has raised questions about the practices of Canada’s men’s and women’s soccer teams and the potential extent of the issue. Canadian officials have suggested that there may be a “systemic ethical shortcoming.”

Paris 2024: ‘Last Supper’ Sketch Not Meant to Offend

A spokesperson for the Paris 2024 organizing committee apologized after a sketch in Friday’s Opening Ceremony outraged the Christian community.

The segment, meant as a parody of Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper,’ featured drag performers in a modern re-creation of the scene. One performer, singer Philippe Katerine, was painted blue and nearly naked, with only a bunch of flowers covering his modesty.

“There was never any intention to disrespect any religious group. The opening ceremony aimed to celebrate community tolerance,” said Paris 2024 Olympics communications director Anne Descamps at a Sunday press conference.

“We believe this ambition was achieved. If people took offense, we are truly sorry.”
