The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has postponed four Copa del Rey matches originally scheduled for Wednesday due to catastrophic Valencia floods in eastern Spain, the worst in three decades, leaving at least 62 people dead. Matches featuring Valencia, Levante, Manises, and Hercules de Alicante have been rescheduled after authorities warned people not to travel except in cases of necessity to the affected areas.
How do the Valencia floods affect Copa del Rey?
Thursday’s matches have also been impacted: Ejea’s game against Hercules de Alicante has been postponed until next week, and the Manises vs. Getafe match is up in the air for the moment. The RFEF said, “The current situation could still modify the scheduled matches for Thursday.”.
The RFEF is considering all options and acting accordingly in strict coordination with the clubs. Valencia’s away game at Parla Escuela in Madrid will now be played on November 6, while Levante’s match at Pontevedra is due to take place the following day.
Valencia, currently last in the LaLiga standings, is scheduled to host Real Madrid on Saturday, but Getafe also requested a match delay after the weather agency AEMET issued a red alert for eastern Valencia as it happened that firefighters worked to rescue some individuals who got trapped by flooding caused by Storm Dana.
Several La Liga outfits, such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, issued their condolences on social media on the floods from Valencia and Albacete to Andalusia. The Barcelona club said, “Barcelona extends its sympathies to the families of the victims and shows closeness to the affected areas in Valencia, Albacete, and Andalusia.”.
LaLiga announced on Wednesday that all matches over the next two rounds will be preceded by a minute of silence in memory of the victims. La Liga, together with all Spanish football clubs, expresses heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those impacted by the Valencia floods.
Severe Valencia floods have led to the postponement of Copa del Rey matches, prioritizing public safety and allowing recovery efforts to proceed.
