The Los Angeles Lakers signed Bronny James, the eldest son of superstar LeBron James, to a four-year, $7.9 million contract after drafting him late in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft.
As his rookie season nears and following some summer league experience, Bronny was questioned about potentially playing in the G League during the 2024-25 season. The 19-year-old welcomed the idea, understanding that the NBA’s development league would offer him more playing opportunities than he might get in the NBA.
“I’m just looking forward to any basketball I play, no matter what level I’m playing at,” James told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. Early career development is vital for Bronny, and competing against strong opponents in the G League could speed up his growth. Most importantly, he showed a willingness to accept such an assignment.
Bronny has struggled in his initial three summer league games, shooting only 23.1% from the field (6-for-26) and going 0-for-12 from three-point range. He scored eight points in his most recent game against the Houston Rockets but had a shooting performance of 3-for-14.
Dane Johnson, L.A.’s summer league coach and the coach of the South Bay Lakers, the organization’s G League team, was asked about Bronny potentially joining his squad.
“I don’t know about that yet, so I can’t really comment on that,” Johnson said. “But I think all these guys are going to be in the G League at some point—the draftees.” The Lakers are scheduled to play the Boston Celtics on Monday, and Bronny will be aiming to improve his shooting and hit his first three-pointer of the summer.
Bronny James has shown a mature and open-minded approach to his basketball career by expressing his willingness to join the Lakers’ G-League team if needed. This attitude reflects his dedication to developing his skills and gaining valuable playing time, which could be crucial for his growth as a player. As he navigates the challenges of his rookie season and continues to refine his game, Bronny’s flexibility and eagerness to embrace different opportunities demonstrate his commitment to reaching his full potential in the NBA.
