PSG’s Messi-Mbappé-Neymar Trio: Leonardo Explains Its Failure

The football world was left in awe when Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) assembled an attacking trio that boasted the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar Jr. However, what appeared to be a dream combination on paper did not translate into the expected success on the pitch. PSG’s sporting director, Leonardo, recently shed light on why this star-studded trio failed to achieve the anticipated glory.

Paris Saint-Germain’s two seasons with Lionel Messi, Mbappé, and Neymar Jr. leading the offensive line didn’t achieve significant success. The team faced challenges in progressing beyond the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 and narrowly clinched the 2022-23 Ligue 1 title. Consequently, PSG underwent significant changes in the summer transfer window. Messi left the club as a free agent when his contract expired on June 30.

Furthermore, Neymar has relocated to Saudi Arabia, reportedly securing a €90 million transfer to Al-Hilal. Although there were speculations about Mbappé’s potential departure, he now holds a central role in the team’s plans.

So, why did this trio fall short of their goals? Former sporting director Leonardo shared his insights during an interview with Globo Esporte, stating, “I don’t believe ego was a major factor.

These players often solve more problems than they create. If you feel the need to manage their egos, you’re part of the problem.

Balancing responsibilities and honors is inherent to the sport. Constructing such an attacking lineup demands your utmost efforts. If it doesn’t succeed, there isn’t a single reason. Managers must prepare players and ensure they feel valued. Ultimately, the club that clinches the championship emerges as the winner.”

PSG has now assembled a fresh attacking trio featuring Mbappé alongside his fellow French national team members, Ousmane Dembélé and Randal Kolo Muani. Will this combination prove successful? Only time will unveil the answer.
