Meetings between Spain and Italy seldom disappoint in terms of excitement, and this encounter was no exception, despite the decisive goal being an own goal. Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, had labeled Thursday’s Euro 2024 Group B match a “European Clasico” ahead of time, and his team displayed remarkable determination to leave a lasting impression.

They completely dominated the first half, with Italy only managing to stay level at half-time thanks to crucial saves from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. In the second half, Spain’s fortunes turned as they finally broke through with the goal they had been seeking. Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net after Donnarumma parried an Alvaro Morata header.

Despite efforts from defending champions Italy to mount a comeback, Spain could have widened their winning margin, especially if Nico Williams’ impressive curling shot from outside the box hadn’t struck the crossbar with 20 minutes remaining.

Spain’s victory secures their place in the knockout stage as group leaders, while Italy faces a pivotal match against Croatia on Monday to ensure their progression.

Alvaro Morata recently spoke to LA 1, expressing gratitude for the fans’ incredible support and underscoring the team’s reliance on their ongoing backing. He highlighted their satisfaction with a strong showing against a formidable national team that posed minimal threats.

Morata recognized the impact of the opposing team’s exceptional goalkeeper, one of the world’s best, on the game’s outcome, but conveyed happiness with the victory and the numerous scoring opportunities created by Spain.

Nico Williams also shared his thoughts with Spanish TV station La 1, expressing his delight and characterizing the match as a collective team effort marked by relentless effort from everyone. He pointed to their determination, referencing their previous performance against Croatia as proof of their ambition to win the Euros. Williams acknowledged the expected challenge posed by Italy’s resilient defense but believed Spain’s multitude of shots justified their victory.

He praised his partnership with Cucurella, highlighting the latter’s supportive role on the field. Williams credited the coach for encouraging him to play his natural game, which he felt he executed effectively during the match.

As expected, Nico Williams received the Player of the Match award from UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel, which noted his consistent threat during possessions, positive performances in one-on-one situations, and defensive contributions.

Cucurella celebrated fervently as Spain successfully held off late pressure from Italy, securing the victory that propels them into the Round of 16. Despite not being in contention for the squad a few months ago, Cucurella has impressed, admirably stepping up in place of Chelsea’s Alex Grimaldo in both matches.

Spain narrowly held on as Donnarumma ventured forward for a late corner, posing significant challenges, but justice prevailed as Spain clinched all three points. Were it not for the heroics of the Italian goalkeeper, Spain could have achieved a more commanding victory. Spain progresses while Italy faces a tough task to advance from this group.

Pérez skillfully bypasses two defenders on the left flank, cuts inside, and attempts to beat Donnarumma, who makes a superb save at the near post. Moments later, Donnarumma is once again called upon and demonstrates his prowess with another outstanding save. Throughout the match, Di Lorenzo has endured considerable difficulties.
