Spain vs. Argentina in the Finalissima: what is it and when?

Spain secured its fourth European Championship on Sunday with goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal. The team won all their games, scored the most goals, and collected all the individual honors.

Rodri was named Euro Cup MVP, Lamine Yamal was awarded best young player, and Nico Williams was the MVP of the final. With this stellar performance, Spain will now face Argentina in the Finalissima, following Argentina’s Copa America victory over Colombia.

The Finalissima, a competition that has occurred only three times, was won by France in 1985 and by Argentina in 1993 and 2022. Luis de la Fuente’s Spain team defeated England in the Euro final at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, while Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina, who trained under Luis de la Fuente during a coaching course in Las Rozas (Madrid), won 1-0 against Colombia in extra time at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

What is the Finalissima?

The Finalissima is a match between the winner of the Euro Cup and the champion of the Copa América. Officially named the Conmebol-UEFA Champions Cup, and formerly known as the Artemio Franchi Cup or the Intercontinental Championship of National Teams, it is an international competition sanctioned by FIFA.

This event is organized jointly by the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Established in 1985, it has been held three times so far, in addition to various friendly matches.

It represents the third partnership between UEFA and CONMEBOL, following the Intercontinental Cup and the Intercontinental Champions Super Cup, and is the first time this collaboration has been applied to national teams.

When is it set to take place?

The exact date for the final has not been officially confirmed yet. However, considering that the last Finalissima was held in London in June 2022, it is anticipated to be scheduled between June and July 2025. The venue for the event has not yet been decided, but numerous locations are likely to be interested in hosting a match between Spain and Argentina.
